10 must-read books for electricians in 2023! Recommended by Master Electricians

If you want to learn about electricians and the electrical industry, then these books are essential for you. No matter where you are in your electrician career, these books can be of great value to you, whether you are studying for an exam, understanding electrical theory, understanding how motors work, understanding transformers, wiring diagrams, or just understanding basic electrical knowledge theory.

A good book can help you improve yourself quickly, but a poorly written electrician's book is a complete waste of your time and money. To help you save time, here's a list of electrical books I've selected, with no ads throughout please feel free to read!

 

1.UGLY’S ELECTRICAL REFERENCES

This compact book includes tables of electrical construction and common electrical formulas and basically everything you might need to know as an electrician in the field. Its main purpose is to teach the ins and outs of the electrical trade to apprentices and veteran electricians alike. It can be used as a reference on the job and can answer the questions that most beginners and apprentices tend to have. Whether you are an apprentice, a journeyman or a master, this is the latest Ugly's book.

 

2.AMERICAN ELECTRICIANS’ HANDBOOK

This is a great little pocket guide for troubleshooting electrical systems. For most skilled tradesmen and master electricians, a lot of this information is common sense, but there are a few things involving thermal troubleshooting and dealing with triple harmonics and grounded conductor heating caused by nonlinear load distribution that I think are worth a read.

 

 

3.ELECTRICAL COURSES FOR APPRENTICES & JOURNEYMEN

This was the first book I read on electricity many years ago. It's a modern, fresh look at electricity that helps field electricians understand how it works, in terms that electricians understand. The book has plenty of useful graphics and ample explanations to enhance your knowledge base, such as single-phase vs. three-phase, different types of motor windings, AC conversion, capacitive resistance, inductive resistance, electrical theory, AC vs. DC, and much more.

 

4.INDUSTRIAL MOTOR CONTROL

Once you understand the basic concepts of electricity and apply your knowledge in the field, you can take your game up a notch. This book is a great advanced book to help beginners understand how to control motors, relays, plc's, and industrial machinery. It covers schematics, diagrams, motor control, control circuits, ladder logic, ladder diagrams and much more. This, my friend, will take things to the next level.

 

5.TRANSFORMER PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS

This book is a must have in your collection of Electrical Nerds. It covers almost everything you might want to know about transformers. It discusses every type of transformer available, the fields around them, ways to cool them, how they can be damaged, how to size them, and more.

 

6.DELMAR’S STANDARD TEXTBOOK OF ELECTRICITY

This is truly a well laid out textbook that covers all the elements of understanding the relationship between electricity and electricians. It covers safety practices, static electricity, magnetism, Ohm's Law, conduction of liquids and gases, AC inductors, resistance, and much more. Get this book if you want to cover everything in a carefully presented complete package.

 

 

7.UNDERSTANDING THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE VOL 1

Understanding the NEC can be a difficult task because of the way it is written. If you are studying for an exam or just trying to digest the content to better understand the meaning of the code, then you should check out Understanding the National Electrical Code - Volume 1 by Mike Holt. It is a visual guide to understanding the NEC and is beautifully laid out. Not only does it cover the first half of the NEC in depth with explanations and examples, but it also provides you with charts and illustrations so you can visually see what is being discussed. This will help you really dive into the code.

 

8.ELECTRICIAN’S TROUBLESHOOTING AND TESTING POCKET GUIDE

This book is a great reference tool for you to have. It covers a wide range of topics, but from a troubleshooting and testing perspective. It discusses not only theory, but also practical ways to test circuits and troubleshoot things like "transformers". It's great to be on your side, especially if you're in the service side of the electrical industry!

 

9.FUNDAMENTALS OF MOTOR CONTROL

Motor Control Basics is a great textbook if you're trying to focus on controlling motors - simply put. There are many ways to control motors, through switches, motor controllers, variable speed drives, relays, contactors, programmable logic controllers, and more. This book covers many of the methods and hardware used in modern motor control circuits.

 

10.ELECTRICAL STUDIES FOR TRADES

Electric Studies for Trades is another wonderful book written by Stephen L. Herman, who has written many books on electrical theory. This book is great because it is industry specific and therefore suitable for an electrician level of understanding. It does not delve into engineering topics, but stays appropriately in the area of electricians in the construction or service industries.
